Tesla’s New Model Y L, a Spacious Six-Seat Electric SUV, Lands in China

Tesla has launched the Model Y L in China, a six-seat version of its popular electric SUV. Priced at RMB 339,000 ($47,180), it’s under the expected RMB 400,000 and offers space, range and features. Deliveries start in September and with China’s love for big SUVs, this timing is perfect.

This new Model Y L joins two existing five-seat variants in China: a rear-wheel-drive model at RMB 263,500 and a long-range all-wheel-drive version at RMB 313,500. At RMB 339,000, the six-seat Model Y L is just 8.13% above the long-range five-seat model but it brings more. A bigger 82.0 kWh ternary lithium battery pack from LG Energy Solution gives the car a CLTC range of 751 kilometers – one kilometer more than the long-range five-seat model.

Space is where the Model Y L really shines. Measuring 4,976 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,668 mm tall, with a wheelbase stretched to 3,040 mm, it’s bigger than the standard Model Y (4,797 mm long, 2,890 mm wheelbase). That extra length means 2,539 liters of storage when the second and third row are folded flat. For perspective, that’s enough space to fit luggage for a family road trip. The six-seat layout is designed for comfort, the third row can now fit adults – a first for the Model Y. Electric armrests on the second-row seats and air vents in the C-pillars so rear passengers won’t be sweating or cramped.

Performance hasn’t been forgotten, as the Model Y L goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, just 0.2 seconds slower than the long-range five-seat model, but 1.4 seconds quicker than the entry-level version. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system provides the handling Tesla drivers love and a lightweight body (2,088 kg) keeps energy consumption low at 12.8 kWh/100km. The 0.216 drag coefficient, helped by the new 19-inch Mecha Wheels and the sleek design, cuts through the air nicely. Buyers can also opt for the Starlight Gold exterior paint for RMB 12,000 extra to add some flair to the package.

Inside, the Model Y L adds more details. All seats have heating and the front two rows have ventilation for those hot summer days. The second and third row seats are electrically controlled foldable seats so it’s easy to switch between passenger and cargo mode. A 16-inch central screen and an 8-inch rear screen for the second-row passengers. The audio system with 18 Tesla-designed speakers and a subwoofer promises to immerse everyone on board.
